Training for parents (ROAR)

In 2007 VRH developed its ROAR programme. We were asked by many schools and partners whether we could help parents get ideas to make reading at home with their children more fun. In response, we have developed our ROAR workshops.

What is ROAR?

ROAR workshops are designed for parents and/or other adults who are helping children practice their reading. One of our experienced trainers delivers the workshop, giving advice, ideas and help to those who attend.

What sort of content is covered?

The idea of a ROAR session is to give people ideas on how to make reading with children fun. At VRH we firmly believe that reading practice should be a relaxed and enjoyable activity for both the child and adult. We look at:

  • Finding the right reading materials
  • Games that help practice reading skills
  • What the child might be feeling as they learn to read
  • How to praise and encourage a child when reading
  • Reading together

How are the workshops structured?

We usually have up to 15 adults in each workshop. These could be parents or other adults who are helping children with their reading. Each workshop is around two hours long and designed to suit the audience. We have delivered workshops for:

  • Parents in schools
  • Parents in Sure Start Centres and nurseries
  • Year 13 students who then read with Year 7 pupils
  • Prisoners who have contact with their children
  • Teaching assistants
  • Library volunteers who read with children at homework clubs

Cost

Workshops start at £500 for two hours. This is dependent on location, so please contact us to get a quote on 020 7729 4087.
