VRH expands into Durham to help local children

Last year almost 1 in 5 children in the North East left primary school unable to read to the required standard. National children’s charity Volunteer Reading Help has launched in Durham its first new branch in almost ten years to help address this issue. The charity is already supporting 28 local children who are struggling with their reading from a number of local schools, including Woodhouse Primary School in Bishop Auckland, and aims to support 60 children by the end of the school year.

13 of our branches have been shortlisted to win a Natwest Community Force award.  Natwest Community Force supports all kinds of local projects and charities throughout England and Wales and they will award three grants of £6,000 per area to the project that receives the most votes!

Francesca Simon supports VRH

Author of the hugely popular Horrid Henry series, Francesca Simon, has pledged her support for our work after reading the Get London Reading campaign in The Evening Standard.  The Orion Publishing Group has also donated a copy of Horrid Henry for every VRH book box.

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall sees VRH in action

Following her support of VRH through the Evening Standard’s ‘Get London Reading’ campaign HRH The Duchess of Cornwall paid a visit to Cavendish Primary School in West London to see some of our reading helpers in action, speak to the children who have been supported by VRH and meet two of the new reading helpers she has sponsored through the campaign.

Get London Reading campaign takes off!
